Practical counselling for men in rural and remote areas
Living in the bush is rewarding, but it makes support harder to access.
There might be no one local you feel comfortable seeing, or that gets what you’re about. You might not have the luxury of driving for hours for an appointment. Or you might have spent years just getting on with it, because that’s what your circumstances required.
Red Gum Reflections offers rural men’s counselling across Australia by secure video or phone. Jack, a counsellor based in regional Victoria, works with men who want practical, private conversations about what is going on and what might help.
This is not counselling built around city life. It is not a textbook approach. Just therapeutic support within the practicalities of life - work, family, distance, community, money, pressure, and the practical limits of living in the sticks.
You can start with a free 15-minute consultation or call to ask a few questions.

Why rural men often leave it too long

For men in rural and remote areas getting support isn’t as simple as booking an appointment nearby.
Distance is a barrier. Privacy another. You might not want to run into someone in the waiting room. You might not want to explain where you’ve been and why.
There are also the usual pressures of country life. Long workdays with few chances to step away. Isolation and relationship pressure. Family expectations and close-knit communities. Physical labour. Financial strain. Limited services.
Men carry things quietly for a long time, often too long. Stress, anger, grief, worry, addiction, loneliness, relationship drama, or the sense that something isn’t right, but can’t be named.
Counselling is not about picking your feelings apart. It is a place to speak clearly about what is happening, think it through, and work out what needs to change.

Online video counselling, or just a phone call away
Online counselling works well for rural and remote men as it removes the practical barriers of distance.
You don’t have to drive hours for an appointment. You don’t have to be seen walking into a local office. You can speak from home, the ute, the shed, an office, or anywhere private that works.
Video sessions are great to get a read on a counsellor. Phone sessions work just as well if the internet is unreliable, or talking without a camera feels easier.
Online counselling is still real counselling. It’s private, focused, and structured around what you bring. No matter the issues you’re hoping to work through video counselling or phone counselling works to address the challenges in your life, relationships, work, or sense of self.
For many men, it’s a practical way to get support without making it anyone else’s business.

What men seek support for
Rural men come to counselling for different reasons. Some arrive with a clear issue. Others just know they are not themselves. Others are attending because they’ve been given an ultimatum by a partner.
Common reasons include:
• Stress, anxiety and feeling overwhelmed
• Anger, frustration or shutting down
• Relationship and family issues
• Separation, divorce or parenting stress
• Work pressure, business stress or financial strain
• Alcohol, drug use, gambling or other habits impacting life
• Grief, death, loss and major life changes
• Loneliness, isolation or feeling disconnected
• Fatherhood, responsibility and identity
• Shame, guilt or regret
• Trauma, including childhood experiences, accidents, violence or long-term stress
• Feeling stuck, flat or unsure what comes next
No need to have the right words before starting. Part of the work is finding a clearer way to describe what has been weighing on you.

A counsellor who understands country life
I was born and raised in regional Victoria and have spent much of my life working and living in country communities. Having lived in capital cities here in Australia and overseas, I know firsthand how unique rural Aussie life is.
Every rural or remote life is different, and I understand some of the pressures that come with distance, self-reliance, practical responsibility and small-town visibility.
I am a PACFA registered counsellor with postgraduate training in narrative therapy, developmental trauma and counselling. I’ve worked with men in community services, family services, and separation services. Studies and experience have given me close insight into mental health settings, and the realities of men dealing with stress, grief, family pressure, trauma, addiction, anger, shame and major life transitions.
My approach is plain-spoken and practical. No forced vulnerability. No jargon. No clinical or pathologising language that doesn’t fit. Just steady, respectful conversations about what is happening, what matters to you, and what will help.

HOW IT WORKS
Getting stated doesn't have to be tricky:

Step One: Free15-minute consultation
We start with a free 15-minute phone consultation to suss me out, share what’s happening and practical information (times, cost, bookings, etc.). No pressure and no obligation.
It is a chance to ask questions, explain what’s happening, and get a feel for whether working together makes sense.
Step Two: Your First Session
In the first session, we talk about how counselling will help you, and the details including privacy, confidentiality, and what we do if things ever feel too much or overwhelming.
From there, we talk about what has brought you here. You might have clear goals, or you might only know that something needs to shift.
The session isn’t about being analysed. It is a conversation that helps us understand what is happening, where to begin, and how we will get there.
Step Three: Ongoing Support
Some men start weekly. Others prefer fortnightly. There’s no fixed program.
The work can be short-term and practical, or more reflective over time. It depends on what you need, what’s realistic, and what’s useful.
Sessions are available by secure video or phone.
